CHILDREN & FAMILIES HELPED
Often, families appeal to CKNW Kids' Fund after they have exhausted all other financial means to help their children, and because of the generous donations we receive from our donors, we are here to help. While the Fund focuses on supporting school-age children, our criteria allows for funding of unique needs often overlooked by government funding or other charities. Although our mandate is quite broad, we focus on three funding fields: therapies, specialized medical equipment, and education bursaries. In all three, we aim to alleviate the often-overwhelming financial burden that caring for a child with special needs can place on a family.
Therapies
We fund a variety of therapies important to the development of a child with special needs. Help ranges from the classic to the innovative—from speech therapy for an autistic child to therapeutic horseback riding for a physically challenged child. Programs our grants have supported include:
Occupational therapy
Trauma counselling
Music therapy
Speech therapy
Therapeutic horseback riding
Physiotherapy
Vision therapy
Behavioural intervention
Respite care
Specialized Medical Equipment
To us, “equipment” is a broad term that can include any apparatus or tool that assists a child with special needs. We’ve provided everything from wheelchairs, hearing aids and orthopedic shoes to a padded safety bed, adapted tricycle, and accessible van conversion.
Education Bursaries
The CKNW Kids' Fund is proud to distribute bursaries to children who may attend an independent, provincially-approved special education program in BC, or who require individualized education or special needs tutoring. We have also granted funding to hundreds of kids with special needs to enable them to attend summer camp.
