January 2021 Community Updates

2020 was a challenging year for many, but thanks to the generous donations from organizations and individuals like you, we were able to make the lives of children and families in need just a little bit easier.

On behalf of CKNW Kids' Fund, we want to thank everyone who contributed to our success this past year. We're thrilled to announce a final total of almost $1,468,000 raised in 2020 for BC kids; w'ere grateful for your support and are hopeful for what the new year will bring.

For over 75 years, CKNW Kids’ Fund has supported children throughout BC by providing grants for medical equipment, therapies, and programs for at-risk youth. What started with humble beginnings - giving gifts to a New Westminster children’s orphanage during the holiday season, turned into the organization we are today.

In 2007, a group of high school students brought it upon themselves to wear pink shirts to school as an act of solidarity, standing up for another student who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The rest is history – the CKNW Kids’ Fund felt inspired by these students, and began our annual Pink Shirt Day campaign to raise awareness and funds to help other youth affected by bullying. The Kids’ Fund #PinkShirtDay is now held on the last Wednesday of February every year, and is the largest Pink Shirt Day campaign in North America. We invite you to show your support through donations and purchasing our Pink Shirt Day merchandise to help spread a message of kindness in your community.

While we recognize the roots of Pink Shirt Day and the importance of its origin story, we are excited to share the design of the 2021 edition. The t-shirt with a white background and powerful pink logo represents the evolution of the cause and the need to promote the message ‘Lift Each Other Up’ in today’s challenging climate. Pink Shirt Day is very aware of how the call for social change related to systemic racism and discrimination is deeply linked to the core premise of the Pink Shirt Day campaigns: that how we treat each other matters, and that we can do better. We also send extra love and acknowledgement to the LGBTQ2S+ community with the addition of the pink rainbow to show our support in light of recent events across the province. Let us lift each other up with hope, kindness and the desire to see a better and more inclusive future for all of us.

You can find our Pink Shirt Day merchandise and more information about our cause on the official Pink Shirt Day website

Cap's Bicycle Shop: Hand Painted Christmas Ornaments

This past December, Cap's Bicycle Shop hosted a fundraiser selling hand painted Christmas ornaments by local artist Hillary Morris. 100% of funds raised from ornament sales went directly to CKNW Kids' Fund, providing specialized medical equipment and therapy to children and families across British Columbia.

The response to the campaign was an overwhelming success and Cap's was able to raise $10,000 this holiday season. A huge thank you to Cap's Bicycle Shop for their fundraising efforts and to everyone who supported and bought an ornament!
